Celebrating former home carers

When you have cared for someone 24 hours per day, 7 days per week for many years, it can leave a huge void in your life when your loved one passes. You may struggle to know what to do next. We believe it is just as important to support former home carers as much as current home carers.

Former Home Carers Group

It is our vision here at Sight and Mind CIC, to be able to provide a regular space for former home carers to gather, learn new skills, re-engage with previous hobbies, enjoy a cuppa and generally come away feeling uplifted. Talking to other former home carers who may be a step ahead of you can be comforting. It may help you feel less alone and that you have somebody to confide in who truly understands you because of their own lived experience.

Afternoon Tea Delight

During Dementia Action Week 2023, we wanted to celebrate former home carers and give them an opportunity to chat, reminisce and share their ideas on what type of things they would like to do in the future to help them maintain independence, enhance their health and wellbeing and more importantly, avoid isolation.

The room was dressed with fresh flowers and bunting. The tables adorned with crisp white tablecloths and floral china and the sun made an appearance. Over the course of 3 hours, the conversation flowed, the food was devoured (and enjoyed!) and much laughter could be heard. It was a very special afternoon and one which we were honoured to host. Yes there were also a few tears but that’s understandable and possibly, because the atmosphere felt safe and nurturing, it was conducive to letting them flow.

It was nice to meet and talk to other people who have been in the same situation.   KF

Meeting people who have gone through similar to myself was comforting. It was a lovely afternoon get-together. It was so rewarding. LH

It was wonderful to have a chance to talk with other people who have gone through the same as me. It brightened my whole day. Such a lot of effort was put into creating a magnificent afternoon. We would all look forward to another one! VN
