What is Dementia Action Week?

Dementia Action Week (15-21 May 2023) is an awareness raising campaign, supported by Alzheimer’s Society,  to encourage people to act on dementia. This year’s theme is dementia diagnosis.

The majority of individuals and families we support and advocate for here at Sight And Mind CIC are post diagnosis however, we also have experience of supporting families who are desperately pursuing a diagnosis. This can be a very stressful and worrying time as, without a diagnosis, they cannot move on and get the help and support they need. If you or someone you know is worried about dementia you can use Alzheimer’s Society’s Royal College of GP’s accredited symptoms checklist to check for possible signs.

Surprise, Surprise!

Once the diagnosis is received and the journey progresses, the invaluable love and support that home carers provide for their loved one is immeasurable. To acknowledge and celebrate them, we chose to surprise a few with afternoon tea this week. We know first hand how difficult it can be to leave the home when you are caring full time and how isolated and invisible this can make you feel. This is exactly why we took afternoon tea to them!

Whilst we had checked the day before that they would be home, it was a complete surprise when we turned up on their doorstep with a hand delivered afternoon tea platter for 2 consisting of sandwiches, quiche, salad, crisps, coleslaw, scones with jam and cream, cakes and a selection of teas. Goodness me this was a real feast for the eyes and hopefully for the taste buds too!

A feast fit for kings!

It’s safe to say that everybody was delighted and in most cases, gave them the much needed opportunity to put their feet up and tuck in without the extra work of making it all themselves.

Thank you so much for the platter, it was a lovely gesture and nice surprise, I was overwhelmed with delight, we enjoyed the lunch enormously, especially the home made scones, they were delicious!! DR

Once again, your gift and time much appreciated. Thank you. DH
